A Woman Under the Influence (1974)

For the sole purpose of capturing the brief reference in Kaufman's film, I found AWUTF as an ode to the chaos of womanhood. And every woman will hate it as an attempt to romanticize-- to beautify-- such havoc. Mabel's cure is simple: motherhood. Her children sees her as a part of them, as one of them, and one who understands them. The boys defend her the way her father could not. The little girl, Maria, punishes her with a cold shoulder, forcing Mabel to feel a human pain that has been numbed out of her and to taste a bit of courage.
Nevertheless, Motherhood is as much the cure as it is Mabel's weakness. How easily it can be taken away from her just by one phone call from her husband, or a visit by her mother-in-law.
The pedestrian would consider this an anthem to the scorned woman, thinking Mabel is a vessel-- as proof-- for all their political bullshit about toxic masculinity, mental health and gender-centric roles. Truth is, we are all Nick, the controlling but faithful husband, the status quo, the ball and chain that makes Mabel want to kill herself.
We are meant to pity Mabel, to love her, to protect her, to care for her, maybe even to save her. But we are not meant to understand her.
This is a film to watch when nursing a morning hangover.
